CVS

Chorionic Villus Sampling is a remarkable prenatal diagnostic test that offers an early window into a baby’s genetic and chromosomal health, often performed during the very first chapters of pregnancy. Through this carefully guided procedure, a tiny sample of tissue is collected from the placenta, specifically from the delicate, finger-like projections known as chorionic villi.

After collection of tissues, we gently analyze cells in the laboratory to detect chromosomal conditions, such as Down syndrome (Trisomy 21), Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18), or inherited genetic disorders like thalassemia. The test provides vital insights at an early stage, empowering parents and doctors with knowledge, clarity, and time for thoughtful decisions and care.

Why is CVS Recommended?

  • Abnormal Screening Results: When the NT scan, Double Marker, or NIPT indicate a higher risk of chromosomal disorders, such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, or Patau syndrome.
  • Family History of Genetic Disorders: If there is a known hereditary condition in the family, such as thalassemia, sickle cell anemia, or cystic fibrosis, CVS helps determine whether the baby is affected.
  • Maternal Age Over 35: The likelihood of chromosomal abnormalities increases slightly with maternal age, so CVS offers reassurance and clarity early in pregnancy.
  • Previous Pregnancy with Genetic Issues: If a previous baby was diagnosed with a genetic or chromosomal condition, CVS helps in early monitoring and informed planning.

Benefits:

  • Enables Early Medical Planning: If a genetic condition is detected, the healthcare team can plan appropriate monitoring, interventions, or specialized care well in advance.
  • Accurate Diagnostic Results: Unlike screening tests that only show the risk, CVS provides a definitive diagnosis by directly analyzing the baby’s genetic material from the placenta.
  • Reassurance for High-Risk Pregnancies: CVS offers clarity and peace of mind to families with a history of genetic disorders or abnormal screening results, reducing anxiety and uncertainty.
  • Helps in Informed Decision-Making: Early and reliable results enable parents and doctors to make timely and informed choices about pregnancy management, treatment options, or special care if needed.
